Joan Navarro

Joan Navarro (Barcelona, 1974)
Graduate in Applied Arts, Sculpture (Llotja School, Barcelona) and degree in Art History from the Central University of Barcelona.
In parallel to my artistic activity, since 2006 I have been teaching the sculpture specialty at the Escola Massana in Barcelona.

"My artwork is structured in two aspects: The two - dimensional work, with acrylic paintings and drawings in Chinese ink on canvas or paper, and the three - dimensional work, composed mainly of sculptures created with natural stone and wood.

From an abstract and simple language, my interest lies in form, in terms of concept and engine of the creative fact. From this use of form as a backbone, I consider that the only important difference between the disciplines that serve as a means of expression is that painting, in essence, is a "surface" and, in contrast, sculpture is a "thing." From this essential difference, I understand that both disciplines agree, in the fact that they are space arts. A space that is neither illusory nor figurative nor illustrative. If not that in themselves, my paintings and sculptures are space. They are the space they occupy, organise and transform.

By this will to occupy, to organise and to transform I mean space and, by extension, Art; as a precursor structure of language that from matter and the symbolic figures of form allow the self to find ubiquity. A ubiquity that I consider necessary for the contemplation and understanding of the work of art.”
